THE DELEGATIONS OF WORLD BOXING AND HBS RECEIVED THE SUPPORT OF BOXING AS AN OLYMPIC SPORT IN LOS ANGELES 2028 FROM PRESIDENT MATEŠA

A press conference was held in the premises of the Croatian Olympic Committee on the occasion of the delegation of the new global boxing organization, World Boxing, ‘s visit to Croatia.

In addition to the visit to the Croatian Olympic Committee, the leading officials of World Boxing previously spoke with the hosts at the Ministry of Tourism and Sports of the Republic of Croatia, and they are guests of the Croatian Boxing Association for the whole day.

The press conference was attended by: President of the Croatian Olympic Committee Zlatko Mateša, President of World Boxing Boris van der Vorst, member of the Executive Board and Olympic Commission of World Boxing Michael Müller (also General Secretary of the German Boxing Association), President of the Croatian Boxing Association Bono Bošnjak and General Secretary of HBS Nikolina Jurić.

The meeting’s host, Croatian Olympic Committee president Zlatko Mateša, expressed his unreserved support for the association through which boxing on a global level traces its way back to the family of Olympic sports.

I thank Mr. Van der Vorst for this visit. I assure you that he will have all our support in ensuring that the organization he heads is the real bearer not only of boxing in terms of performance at the Olympic Games, but also of what made us very happy – fair play, clean and fair judging and all the innovations that will be introduced into that system. This is another guarantee that under the auspices of this organization boxing can continue to develop as an extremely popular sport – Zlatko Mateša

Boxing, as a classic sport, remains in the Olympic Games’ program. Then, everything passes into the hands of our dear president Bona Bošnjak and his team to ensure that our male and female boxers will perform at the Games in LA through Olympic qualifications – Zlatko Mateša

World Boxing President Boris van der Vorst responded with undisguised optimism:

As the president of the World Boxing Federation, it is a great honor for me to be in Croatia because Croatia is an intense boxing nation, it is the leader of boxing in the Balkans, it has a well-run Federation, which is confirmed by the organization of this meeting with the president of the National Olympic Committee and the officials of the Ministry of Sports. For us at World Boxing, the most important thing is to keep the boxing dream alive in every gym worldwide. In the last few months, we have worked hard to be recognized professionally. Our next step is re-inclusion, that is, re-inclusion of boxing in the Olympic Games program in LA. I thank President Mateša for supporting us and for supporting the realization of boxers’ dreams in Croatia. We want to unite world boxing and World Boxing is in a good position to make it happen.

World Boxing IO member Michael Müller said that every future president of the International Olympic Boxing Club (and in April this year Thomas Bach will get a successor) will be interested in boxers’ performances at the Olympic Games, because it is one of the “flagships” of Olympic sports.

HBS president Bono Bošnjak spoke about the success of Croatian boxing and the Croatian Boxing Association:

Entry into World Boxing means a lot for Croatian boxing, for its future and development… And we see its bright future. In the history of Croatian boxing, European medals have never been won, like last year, as many as 13 European medals. This is a strong wind for all of us, considering that we are already members of World Boxing, which will be the main organizer and representative for the Olympic qualifications. We are staying here and hope to have several boxers at the next Olympic Games, given that we have a perfect and high-quality generation. Thanks again to President Van Vorst for coming and everyone for their support, especially President Mateša.

The new boxing association, Worlds Boxing, is going further. About 80 members were mentioned, and their delegation will use their stay in Croatia to encourage the national boxing associations of the surrounding countries to join them.
