MNK Olmissum experienced a remarkable mixture of disappointment and celebration as their UEFA Futsal Champions League main-round campaign concluded with a convincing defeat against Sporting CP. The Portuguese champions demonstrated their exceptional quality with a dominant performance at Ribnjak Sports Hall, scoring nine goals against the Croatian representatives and confirming their position at the top of Group 3.

However, the result did not prevent Olmissum from achieving one of their major European objectives. Before their encounter with Sporting had even begun, the Croatian champions already knew they would advance to the Round of 16 after Stalitsa Minsk defeated French side Étoile Lavalloise 3–1 in the earlier group fixture. That result guaranteed Olmissum third place regardless of their performance against Sporting, allowing the team from Omiš to celebrate qualification despite the heavy defeat.

The achievement is particularly significant because Olmissum completed the group without winning a match, collecting two points through draws against Étoile Lavalloise and Stalitsa Minsk. Those results ultimately proved sufficient under the competition's qualification format, which allows the top three teams from each Path A group to progress to the knockout rounds.

Sporting Dominate From the Opening Minutes

Sporting entered the encounter as clear favourites, having already secured two victories and established themselves as the strongest team in the group. The reigning European champions immediately demonstrated their attacking quality, moving the ball quickly and repeatedly creating opportunities against an Olmissum defence that struggled to contain their movement and technical ability.

The Portuguese side established a commanding advantage during the opening stages, scoring four goals within the first 13 minutes. Rúben Teixeira opened the scoring before Tomás Paçó doubled the lead. Bruno Pinto and Wesley França then added further goals, leaving the Croatian champions facing a four-goal deficit before the match had reached its halfway point.

Although Olmissum attempted to respond through more aggressive attacking movements, Sporting maintained control of possession and continued creating dangerous opportunities. The home side struggled to build sustained pressure, with the visitors repeatedly exploiting defensive gaps and winning possession in promising areas.

Olmissum eventually reduced the deficit through Ante Kovačević, who finished after an assist from Duje Kustura. The goal provided a brief moment of encouragement for the home supporters, but it proved to be the Croatian team's only successful attacking contribution of the evening.

Sporting entered half-time leading 4–1, having demonstrated the speed, precision and finishing ability that have established them among Europe's strongest futsal teams. The visitors' commanding advantage reflected their superiority during the opening 20 minutes, while Olmissum faced the challenge of avoiding further damage against opponents determined to finish the group stage with another victory.

Portuguese Champions Extend Their Advantage

The second half followed a similar pattern, with Sporting continuing to dominate possession and attacking opportunities. Vinícius Rocha scored shortly after the restart to extend the visitors' lead to 5–1, effectively ending any remaining hopes of an Olmissum comeback.

The Portuguese champions maintained their attacking intensity despite holding a comfortable advantage. Their ability to create chances through quick passing combinations and effective movement repeatedly exposed the Croatian side's defensive structure, while Olmissum struggled to find opportunities to threaten the Sporting goal.

Felipe Valério added Sporting's sixth goal before Bruno Maior increased the advantage further. Pinto then scored his second goal of the evening to make it 8–1, highlighting the visitors' ability to maintain attacking efficiency throughout the match.

The final goal arrived in the 37th minute when Ivan Chishkala completed the scoring, sealing a comprehensive 9–1 victory for the Portuguese side. Sporting's nine-goal performance underlined the difference in quality between the reigning European champions and a Croatian team that had already achieved its primary objective of reaching the knockout stages.

For Olmissum, the defeat exposed defensive weaknesses that will require significant improvement before the next phase of the competition. Although the match no longer carried qualification consequences, conceding nine goals against elite opposition provided a clear indication of the tactical discipline and defensive organisation needed to compete successfully at the highest European level.

Dramatic Stalitsa Victory Secures Olmissum's Progress

While the defeat against Sporting was disappointing, the decisive moment in Olmissum's qualification campaign had arrived earlier in the evening. Stalitsa Minsk defeated Étoile Lavalloise 3–1, eliminating the French champions and securing progression for both the Belarusian side and Olmissum.

The match between Stalitsa and Étoile Lavalloise was particularly significant because both teams entered the final round with just one point. A draw would have created a complicated three-team tiebreaker involving Olmissum, potentially leaving the Croatian champions dependent on their result against Sporting.

However, Stalitsa secured victory with two goals in the closing minute, ensuring that the French side could no longer overtake Olmissum. The result confirmed that the Croatian team would finish third in Group 3, behind Sporting and Stalitsa, and advance to the Round of 16.

The qualification scenario also highlighted the importance of Olmissum's remarkable comeback against Stalitsa in the previous round. Trailing 4–2 with only 40 seconds remaining, the Croatian champions scored twice through Brazilian forward Igor Da Costa to secure an extraordinary 4–4 draw.

Those two late goals ultimately proved decisive in keeping Olmissum ahead of Étoile Lavalloise in the final standings. Without that dramatic recovery, the Croatian side would have entered the final round in a considerably weaker position, making the draw against Stalitsa one of the defining moments of their European campaign.

Their earlier 1–1 draw against Étoile Lavalloise also contributed to qualification, with Da Costa scoring the equaliser in another demanding encounter. Although Olmissum failed to record a victory across the three matches, their resilience in the opening two rounds provided the points required to reach the knockout stage.

Olmissum Finish Third in Group 3

Olmissum concluded the main round with two points from three matches, scoring six goals and conceding 14. Their campaign included two draws and one defeat, leaving them third behind Sporting and Stalitsa Minsk.

The standings underline the contrasting campaigns experienced by the four teams. Sporting dominated the group with three victories, scoring 19 goals and conceding just three, confirming their status as one of the leading contenders for another European title.

Stalitsa recovered from their opening defeat against Sporting to secure four points, including the decisive victory over Étoile Lavalloise. Olmissum, meanwhile, demonstrated enough resilience in their opening two fixtures to secure third place, despite the heavy defeat in the final round.

For Étoile Lavalloise, elimination represents a disappointing outcome after reaching the Champions League semi-finals during the previous season. The French club entered the competition with considerable expectations but failed to record a victory in Omiš, finishing bottom of the group with just one point.

Round of 16 Draw Presents Another Major Challenge

Olmissum will discover their Round of 16 opponents during UEFA's knockout-stage draw on November 4 at 1 p.m. in Nyon, Switzerland. Having finished third in Group 3, the Croatian champions will enter the draw as an unseeded team, increasing the likelihood of another demanding European encounter.

The seeded clubs include the group winners and runners-up from Path A, while the unseeded teams consist of the third-placed clubs from those groups and the four winners from Path B. The structure means Olmissum will face one of the stronger teams from the main round, with opponents potentially including some of Europe's most established futsal organisations.

UEFA has confirmed that the Round of 16 will be played over two legs, with the aggregate winners advancing to the quarter-finals. The knockout draw will also establish the potential quarter-final pairings, providing clubs with a clearer picture of their possible routes towards the final tournament.

The 2026/27 Champions League season will conclude with a four-team final tournament scheduled for May 7–9, 2027, at Biel/Bienne Arena in Switzerland. Reaching that stage would require Olmissum to overcome several demanding opponents, but the Croatian side have already achieved an important milestone by qualifying among Europe's final 16 clubs.

For head coach Frane Despotović, the immediate challenge will be preparing his team for a significant increase in competitive intensity. The defeat against Sporting demonstrated the difficulties of facing Europe's elite, particularly when opponents possess greater attacking depth and experience.

Olmissum must improve their defensive organisation, reduce mistakes during transitions and become more efficient when creating opportunities. Their previous matches against Étoile Lavalloise and Stalitsa showed that they can compete against established European opponents, but progressing further will require more consistent performances across the full 40 minutes.

Important Achievement Despite Painful Defeat

Although the 9–1 scoreline represents a disappointing conclusion to the group stage, Olmissum's qualification remains a meaningful success for Croatian futsal. The team from Omiš have secured a place among Europe's 16 best clubs, continuing the country's presence in the continent's leading futsal competition.

The campaign has demonstrated the team's determination, particularly during difficult moments when elimination appeared possible. Da Costa's extraordinary late double against Stalitsa and the earlier equaliser against Étoile Lavalloise proved decisive, illustrating how individual contributions can influence an entire European campaign.

However, the Sporting defeat also serves as a reminder of the gap that can exist between successful domestic clubs and the strongest teams in European futsal. Competing against opponents with the technical ability, attacking movement and experience of Sporting requires exceptional concentration and tactical discipline.

For Olmissum, the coming weeks will provide an opportunity to analyse their performances, strengthen their approach and prepare for another major European test. The team have already demonstrated an ability to respond to setbacks, and that resilience could prove valuable when the knockout stage begins.

Olmissum's Champions League campaign has produced a remarkable contrast between results and achievement. A heavy 9–1 defeat against Sporting brought the group stage to a painful conclusion, but the Croatian champions had already secured their place among Europe's final 16 teams. With the knockout draw approaching, the club from Omiš can celebrate an important European milestone while recognising that significant improvements will be required to compete successfully against the continent's strongest opponents.
