THE DRAMA IN FIVE SETS WENT TO MURSA OSIJEK

After the women’s final, the Vinko Dobrić Croatian Cup for volleyball players was played in Sisak’s new Zeleni Brijeg hall. In the final, there were old rivals who had played in the final for several years, Mursa Osijek and Mladost. It was a superb match between rivals who know each other well. After beating them three times this season, Mladost lost 2:3 (28:26, 26:24, 23:25, 23:25, 15:17) to Osijek, who knew how to celebrate this big trophy for them on the field.

Mladost led most of the first set but never so much that they could relax. On the contrary, after the 5-0 series, Mursa takes the lead with 18:17. The teams entered the end of the set level, 21:21, Mladost was the first to reach the set ball, but in the end, it took advantage of only the second, for 28:26. In the meantime, Osijek also had two unused set balls…

The second set also went to the difference, 26:24 for Zagreb, after a tremendous last point with a one-on-one block by the organizer of the Mladost game, Marija Močić. Mladost dictated the tempo in that period of the game as well, and Mursa maintained a small deficit, again until the end of the set, in which they entered tied, 22:22. By the end of the set, a review of missed serves, but also the greater maturity of the Mladost team decided the winner.

The third set was not significantly different either, except perhaps at the very beginning, when Osijek started with 6:2. However, with two series of 3-0 each, Mladost already takes the score in their favor at 8:7. As in the first two sets, he maintained a lead of 2-3 points, but also as in the first two sets, the teams entered the end of the set in a tie (21:21). And so, point by point, until Jovović’s offense under the net, in a slump, trying to save one ball… Point for 25:23 Murs, a set in which they wisely asked for video checks…

The win of the set had a stimulating effect on the people of Osijek; they entered the continuation of the match with even more confidence, so in the fourth set, they were the ones who dictated the pace and had the advantage in the result (5:2, 12:9, 14:11). The youth now have the opportunity to catch up with them, play more risky, which results in a lot of missed serves. But, at 15:15, the teams are equal again, and at 18:16, Mursa asks for the first minute of rest for Mladost, and at 20:17, immediately the second. With the entry of Vuković on the serve, Mursa won the tie at 21:21, so again we have a dramatic end to the set, which the Osijekians won with two excellent blocks at the end with 25:23, for 2-2 in sets.

The fifth set was stressful in itself. It was played point for point, a battle of trenches. When the sides changed, the result was 8:7 for Zagreb. Mladost was the first to reach +2 (11:9). At 13:13, the match was tied again. The people of Zagreb had the first match point at 14:13, and the people of Osijek had the first match point at 15:14, and they used the second one for 17:15.

A superb game between two great teams who played great volleyball for two and a half hours.

Ratko Peris, coach of Mursa Osijek, said after the game:

All credit to both; every set was uncertain. I think it was a good volleyball game, there were some mistakes, but that’s a sport. In the end, I think we came out as winners deservedly.

Leo Andrić, with 36 points the most effective player on the field, commented on the match like this:

We had a chance in every set. We fought heroically against Mladost, who won against us three times so far in the season. It was a battle for every point, and I think we deserved to win. We played fighting, we lost sets, we came back, and I think we deserved the trophy. Thanks to the team and staff; this is a great feeling.

Radovan Gačić, coach of Mladost, stated after the game:

It was great volleyball for the spectators. In the end, the people of Osijek celebrated in that uncertain match in which there were both mistakes and great moves. We had the opportunity to end the match in our favor after leading 2-0 in the third, fourth, and fifth sets, but Mursa’s combativeness paid off.
