Hajduk Split endured one of their most frustrating European evenings of the season as a late own goal handed Lincoln Red Imps a dramatic victory in Gibraltar. The Croatian side dominated long periods of the encounter, repeatedly advanced into the opposition's final third and created several promising opportunities, but their inability to convert possession into goals ultimately proved costly.

The decisive moment arrived just one minute before the end of regular time. Following a Lincoln free kick, Christian Rutjens directed a header against the post, with the rebound striking Hajduk defender Dennis Hadžikadunić on the knee and crossing the goal line. The unfortunate deflection gave the home side the lead despite their limited attacking threat throughout the match.

For García and his players, the result was particularly disappointing because a victory would have substantially strengthened Hajduk's prospects of progressing beyond the Conference League league phase. Instead, the Croatian club left Gibraltar empty-handed after a match in which Lincoln failed to register a shot on target but still managed to collect all three points.

Hajduk Dominate but Struggle to Break Down Lincoln

Hajduk entered the encounter determined to build on their earlier European performances against Ajax and Thun. García made only limited changes to his starting lineup, with Alec Van Hoorenbeeck replacing Dario Marešić in central defence. Marešić had been managing a thigh problem, prompting the coaching staff to avoid unnecessary risks despite the importance of the fixture.

The visitors immediately attempted to establish control through patient possession and aggressive pressing. Lincoln responded by defending in a compact formation with five players across the back, restricting space between the lines and forcing Hajduk to attack around the edges of the penalty area.

Abdoulie Sanyang, also known as Bamba, provided one of Hajduk's most dangerous attacking outlets during the opening stages. His pace and dribbling repeatedly allowed him to progress beyond defenders, but the final pass was often missing. Dalisson also looked threatening, attempting a long-range effort in the 17th minute that narrowly missed the target.

Lincoln remained largely focused on protecting their defensive shape and attempting to exploit isolated opportunities through long balls. The hosts threatened midway through the first half when a promising attack reached Manuel Toledano, but Mathieu Acapandié intervened before the move could develop into a clear chance.

Hajduk continued to press forward, with Michele Šego combining with Šimun Hrgović to create another opportunity for Dalisson. The Brazilian's volley sailed over the crossbar, extending a sequence of missed chances that would become increasingly frustrating for the visitors.

By half-time, Hajduk had registered seven attempts but remained unable to find the breakthrough. Lincoln goalkeeper Jaylan Hankins had relatively little to do during the opening period, as the Croatian side repeatedly struggled to direct their efforts on target.

The score remained goalless at the interval, despite Hajduk's territorial advantage and greater attacking ambition.

Missed Chances Prove Costly as Lincoln Stay Organised

The second half began with Hajduk attempting to increase their attacking intensity. García's team continued pressing high up the pitch and forcing Lincoln into defensive situations, but the home side maintained its compact structure and prevented the visitors from developing a consistent rhythm.

Lincoln occasionally threatened from set pieces, with Kike Gómez sending an effort wide early in the second period. However, the Gibraltar champions remained primarily concerned with denying Hajduk space and limiting opportunities inside their penalty area.

The Croatian side continued to experience difficulties in the final third. Their passing combinations often brought them into promising positions, but the decisive action lacked precision. Sanyang and Marin Šotiček received yellow cards, while repeated stoppages made it difficult for Hajduk to establish sustained attacking momentum.

García responded by introducing Dario Marešić and Carlos Martín in place of Van Hoorenbeeck and Šego during the second half. The substitutions were intended to provide fresh energy and a different attacking approach, particularly as the visitors became increasingly frustrated by their inability to score.

Šotiček wasted one of Hajduk's clearest opportunities when he found space approximately ten metres from goal but sent his effort over the crossbar. The missed chance was especially costly because Lincoln had offered relatively little attacking threat and appeared increasingly focused on protecting a goalless draw.

Marko Livaja was subsequently introduced in place of Dalisson, giving Hajduk another experienced attacking option for the closing stages. His arrival created immediate danger, and the Croatian forward came close to breaking the deadlock with a low effort from inside the penalty area.

However, Hankins produced an excellent save to preserve Lincoln's clean sheet. The goalkeeper's intervention proved crucial, as Hajduk's failure to convert another promising chance allowed the home side to remain competitive heading into the final minutes.

Hadžikadunić Own Goal Decides the Match

The decisive sequence arrived in the 89th minute following a Lincoln free kick. Christian Rutjens rose inside the penalty area and directed his header towards goal, striking the post with goalkeeper Toni Silić beaten.

The ball rebounded directly into Dennis Hadžikadunić, who had almost no time to react. It struck the defender's knee and crossed the line, giving Lincoln an unexpected 1–0 advantage and leaving Hajduk facing defeat despite their dominance.

The own goal was particularly cruel because Hadžikadunić had played an important role in Hajduk's defensive organisation throughout the encounter. The incident was the result of an unfortunate rebound rather than a deliberate technical error, but it ultimately determined the outcome.

Hajduk attempted to respond during six minutes of stoppage time, pushing additional players forward and searching for a late equaliser. Hrgović made a promising run into the penalty area after a pass from Alberto del Moral, but Hankins reacted quickly to prevent the opportunity from developing.

The visitors also threatened from a corner, but Lincoln defended successfully and maintained their narrow advantage until the final whistle.

The result completed a remarkable outcome for the Gibraltar champions. Despite failing to record a shot on target, Lincoln secured victory through the late own goal, while Hajduk were left to reflect on numerous missed opportunities and their inability to break down an organised defensive opponent.

García Faces Questions Over Hajduk's Attacking Efficiency

The defeat raises important questions about Hajduk's ability to convert territorial dominance into results. García's team controlled much of the match and successfully restricted Lincoln's attacking opportunities, but they lacked the precision and creativity needed to break down a deep defensive block.

The challenge was familiar. In domestic competition, Hajduk have frequently faced opponents willing to defend with large numbers of players behind the ball. Those situations require quick movement, accurate final passes and decisive finishing, qualities that were missing during crucial moments in Gibraltar.

Sanyang's ability to beat defenders offered encouragement, but his deliveries rarely found teammates in dangerous positions. Dalisson produced several attempts without scoring, while Šotiček missed an excellent second-half opportunity. Even Livaja, who brought greater experience and attacking presence after entering the match, was denied by an outstanding save from Hankins.

The encounter also demonstrated the importance of set-piece defending. Lincoln created relatively little from open play but remained dangerous whenever they had opportunities to deliver balls into the penalty area. Their winning goal came from precisely such a situation, underlining how one moment can undo an otherwise controlled performance.

For García, the immediate task will be ensuring his players respond positively rather than allowing the disappointment to affect their next matches. Hajduk have demonstrated attacking quality in previous European encounters, but the defeat in Gibraltar shows that controlling possession is not enough without effective finishing.

European Knockout Hopes Suffer a Setback

The loss represents Hajduk's first defeat of the Conference League league phase after encouraging results against Ajax and Thun. Having entered the encounter with momentum and ambitions of strengthening their qualification position, the Split club missed an important opportunity to move closer to European football in the spring.

Under the Conference League format, the top eight teams in the 36-club league phase qualify directly for the Round of 16, while teams finishing between ninth and 24th enter the knockout play-offs. The remaining clubs are eliminated.

With three league-phase matches still to play, Hajduk's European campaign remains alive. However, collecting points in the remaining fixtures will be essential, particularly after losing against an opponent they had expected to challenge successfully.

The result also provides a reminder of the competitiveness of European club football. Lincoln Red Imps may lack the resources and international reputation of Hajduk, but their disciplined defensive approach and ability to capitalise on a set piece were sufficient to secure a memorable victory.

For the Gibraltar champions, defeating a Croatian club with Hajduk's history represents a significant achievement. Lincoln demonstrated that tactical discipline and defensive resilience can overcome differences in individual quality, even when a team spends much of the match without possession.

Hajduk, meanwhile, must improve their efficiency in front of goal and ensure that the disappointment in Gibraltar does not undermine the confidence established through their earlier European performances.

Hajduk's 1–0 defeat against Lincoln Red Imps was a painful reminder that football is decided by goals rather than possession. Despite controlling the encounter and creating several excellent opportunities, García's players were unable to find the breakthrough and suffered a dramatic late defeat through Hadžikadunić's unfortunate own goal. With their European qualification ambitions still within reach, Hajduk must now demonstrate that they can turn attacking superiority into results when the pressure is greatest.
