Cibona could hardly have dreamed of a more spectacular return to the Basketball Champions League. In front of around 2,000 fans in Zagreb, Ivan Rudež’s team delivered an outstanding performance against one of the leading favorites in Group B and immediately sent a strong message to the rest of the competition.

Galatasaray arrived in Zagreb with a highly regarded roster, significantly greater financial resources and the status of clear favorites, but none of that mattered once the game began.

Cibona played with greater intensity, precision and organization, fully deserving an emphatic 20-point victory.

Cibona and Galatasaray Stayed Level Only in the Opening Quarter

The opening period offered little indication of the dominance that would follow.

Galatasaray briefly led 8-4, while the first quarter ended tied at 24-24.

The decisive shift came in the second quarter.

Cibona raised the intensity on defense, moved the ball faster and began punishing nearly every mistake made by the Turkish side. The hosts won the second period 26-18 and entered halftime with a 50-42 advantage.

Instead of the expected Galatasaray response after the break, the opposite happened.

The Zagreb team remained in control, winning the third quarter 21-19 and entering the final ten minutes with a double-digit lead at 71-61.

Galatasaray attempted to make the game competitive again, but Cibona never allowed the visitors to seriously threaten a comeback.

The Wolves increased their advantage in the closing minutes, taking the final quarter 25-15 and sealing a convincing 96-76 victory.

Cibona led for more than 33 minutes of the game, while Galatasaray spent just over two minutes in front.

Khalif Battle Delivers a Performance to Remember

The standout player in Cibona’s remarkable victory was Khalif Battle.

The American guard produced a brilliant individual performance, finishing with 32 points and five assists.

Battle shot 11-of-15 from the field and was particularly impressive from three-point range, making six of his seven attempts.

His contribution went far beyond scoring.

Battle’s aggressiveness constantly put pressure on Galatasaray’s defense and created additional space for his teammates, while the visitors struggled to find any effective way to contain him throughout the game.

The official Basketball Champions League website highlighted Battle’s performance as one of the main stories from the opening day of the new season.

However, Cibona’s victory was far from a one-man show.

Captain Roko Badžim scored 19 points and made an outstanding five of six attempts from beyond the arc, while Lovro Mazalin added 18 points, five assists and three steals.

Mazalin was also extremely efficient, converting nine of his 11 field-goal attempts.

Kamaka Hepa contributed 12 points, while Rickey McGill, despite scoring only four points, played an important role in organizing the offense with six assists and three steals.

Cibona’s Remarkable Three-Point Shooting Punishes Galatasaray

A quick look at the statistics explains why Galatasaray had so few answers.

Cibona shot 55.1 percent from the field and an extraordinary 60.9 percent from three-point range, making 14 of 23 attempts.

Galatasaray, by comparison, converted only eight of 26 three-point attempts, finishing at 30.8 percent.

But shooting was not the only reason for the victory.

Cibona recorded 21 assists while committing just nine turnovers, compared with Galatasaray’s 16 turnovers.

The Zagreb side also collected ten steals and repeatedly converted the visitors’ mistakes into easy scoring opportunities.

The difference in transition was equally significant.

Cibona outscored Galatasaray 18-6 in fast-break points and also dominated inside the paint, 42-26.

Those numbers show that the final score was not simply the result of an exceptional shooting night.

Cibona outplayed Galatasaray in multiple areas of the game — from defensive energy and ball security to transition offense and finishing around the basket.

Rudež’s Cibona Shows Character and a Completely Different Face

The victory carries even greater weight considering that only a few days earlier, Cibona had opened its ABA League campaign with an 89-76 defeat against Cedevita Olimpija in Ljubljana.

Against Galatasaray, an entirely different team appeared on the court.

Cibona looked confident, physically strong and tactically disciplined.

Head coach Ivan Rudež emphasized after the game the energy and active defense his players used to limit Galatasaray’s physically powerful roster, while also praising the character and emotional stability demonstrated by his team throughout the contest.

Battle described the victory as an important boost for the team’s confidence, while Galatasaray head coach Gianmarco Pozzecco acknowledged that Cibona played with more energy and fully deserved the convincing win.

The European Return Cibona Could Only Have Dreamed Of

The result carries additional symbolism because Cibona returned to the Basketball Champions League after almost a decade away from the competition.

The Zagreb club last appeared in the tournament during the 2016-17 season.

According to official Basketball Champions League data, nine years and nine months had passed between Cibona’s two appearances in the competition.

Galatasaray is also far from an unfamiliar opponent in Cibona’s European history.

The two clubs met during the 1985-86 season, when Cibona defeated the Turkish side twice on its way to becoming European champions.

More than four decades later, Galatasaray once again left Zagreb following a heavy defeat.

Given the strength of the opposition, the context of the match and the dominant manner in which the victory was achieved, the 96-76 result can comfortably be ranked among Cibona’s most significant European victories in recent years.

Group B Suddenly Looks Very Different

Cibona competes in Group B alongside Galatasaray, Legia Warsaw and French side SIG Strasbourg.

The format of the competition makes every result particularly important.

The group winner advances directly to the Round of 16, while the second- and third-placed teams must go through the play-in series.

That makes the victory over Galatasaray far more than just a prestigious result.

It could prove extremely valuable in the final group standings, especially considering that Galatasaray entered the competition as one of the main favorites to win the group.

One match, of course, does not define an entire season.

Cibona is simultaneously competing in the Croatian domestic league, the ABA League and Europe, creating a major physical and organizational challenge for Rudež and his players.

But after a night like this, one thing is already clear — Cibona did not return to the European stage merely to take part.

Dražen Petrović Basketball Hall Hosts Another Great European Night

That may ultimately be the most important message of the victory over Galatasaray.

Throughout its history, Cibona built its identity on major European nights, but in recent years those occasions have become increasingly rare.

That is why the 96-76 victory over the powerful Turkish club represents much more than two points and a position in the group standings.

In front of around 2,000 supporters, the Wolves showed that the Dražen Petrović Basketball Hall can once again become a stage for high-level European basketball.

Khalif Battle was unstoppable, Badžim delivered from long range, Mazalin produced an almost flawless performance, and the entire Cibona team played with an intensity and discipline Galatasaray simply could not match.

Cibona 96, Galatasaray 76.

As European season openers go, it could hardly have been better.
