Croatian handball champions HC Zagreb endured a difficult night in the EHF Champions League as Aalborg Håndbold delivered a commanding performance to secure a ten-goal victory in front of approximately 6,200 spectators.

The Danish side, one of Europe's leading handball clubs and a regular contender for the Champions League Final Four, controlled much of the contest, exposing Zagreb's defensive weaknesses and leaving the hosts struggling to keep pace.

The match ended 33–23 in Aalborg's favour, with the visitors establishing a 17–12 advantage by half-time before extending their lead in the second period.

Aalborg Take Control Early

Zagreb entered the match hoping to challenge one of Europe's strongest teams, but the visitors quickly demonstrated their quality. Aalborg's organised defence created immediate problems for Zagreb's attacking players, while their quick transitions repeatedly caught the Croatian side out of position.

The visitors established a 6–3 lead within the opening ten minutes, forcing Zagreb coach Hrvoje Horvat to make tactical adjustments. Despite switching to a more aggressive defensive formation, Zagreb continued to struggle against Aalborg's attacking efficiency. German international Juri Knorr played a particularly influential role, contributing six goals, while Thomas Arnoldsen, Mads Hoxer and other Aalborg players helped maintain the pressure. By half-time, the Danish champions had built a five-goal advantage, leaving Zagreb facing a difficult challenge.

Zagreb's Comeback Hopes Quickly Fade

The Croatian champions briefly showed signs of improvement after the interval.

Goalkeeper Sandro Meštrić produced several important saves, while goals from Luka Topić and Filip Glavaš helped Zagreb reduce the deficit to just three goals. For a moment, the home crowd had reason to believe a comeback might be possible.

However, Zagreb failed to capitalise on additional attacking opportunities, allowing Aalborg to regain control. The Danish side responded with another dominant spell, extending their advantage to nine goals and effectively deciding the outcome well before the final whistle. Filip Glavaš was Zagreb's standout performer, finishing with an impressive ten goals from ten attempts, but his individual performance was not enough to prevent a heavy defeat.

Coach Horvat Frustrated by Defensive Mistakes

Following the match, Zagreb head coach Hrvoje Horvat admitted that his players had failed to prevent the exact situations they had discussed before the game. Horvat was particularly concerned about the number of easy goals conceded and the team's inability to maintain defensive stability. The coach acknowledged that Zagreb had shown some improvement when their defence was properly organised, but those moments were too brief to challenge Aalborg consistently.

He also pointed to the collapse that followed Zagreb's promising start to the second half, when the Croatian side had reduced the gap to three goals. Horvat stressed that the team must thoroughly analyse the defeat and make significant improvements ahead of the return fixture in Denmark. Despite the disappointing result, he insisted Zagreb would continue fighting for points against their stronger opponents.

Aalborg Praise Their Defensive Performance

Aalborg head coach Simon Dahl Jørgensen expressed satisfaction with his team's performance, particularly their defensive organisation during the first half. The Danish coach highlighted how effectively his players controlled the game against an opponent traditionally capable of producing difficult home matches.

Juri Knorr also praised Aalborg's defensive display, describing it as one of the key factors behind the convincing victory. Zagreb goalkeeper Sandro Meštrić admitted that Aalborg's quality was clear but emphasised that his own team had performed below expectations. Although Zagreb fought throughout the match, attacking mistakes and inconsistent execution prevented them from mounting a serious challenge.

Another Difficult European Challenge Ahead

The defeat highlighted the gap between Zagreb and Europe's elite handball clubs.

Aalborg have reached the Champions League final twice in the past five seasons and remain among the continent's strongest teams. Zagreb, meanwhile, face an increasingly demanding battle to achieve their European ambitions this season. The two sides will meet again on October 14 in Denmark, giving Horvat and his players an immediate opportunity to respond. For Zagreb, the priority will be improving defensive organisation, reducing costly mistakes and finding greater consistency in attack.

Thursday's defeat was a painful reminder that competing against Europe's best requires far more than individual talent. Zagreb will need a considerably stronger collective performance if they hope to challenge Aalborg in the return fixture.
